Suffrage train rides, pet food drive, live music and more highlight weekend events around Carson City area

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. The Nevada State Railroad Museum is holding train rides dedicated toward women’s suffrage on Saturday. Feeding Pets of the Homeless is hosting its 11th annual nationwide pet food and supply drive over the next three days, and there is plenty of live music for all to enjoy! Read on for more information.

New safety guidelines for the state of Nevada have been enforced, so please make sure to wear a mask and practice safe social distancing.

Below is a rundown of activities over the next three days.

Friday, August 14
Carson City-based Pets of the Homeless host 11th nationwide pet food and supply drive (all day). Feeding Pets of the Homeless, a national non-profit organization dedicated to feeding and providing emergency veterinary care to pets of the homeless population, is hosting its 11th annual Give a Dog a Bone Week, a national event to collect pet food and supplies for those in need, from Aug. 10-16. Participants can find a partner donation site in their local community to donate pet food and supplies at www.petsofthehomeless.org. Pet food donations can also be purchased online and shipped to Pet Food Provider Site partners found at www.petsofthehomeless.org/get-help. Donated food will be distributed to food banks, soup kitchens, and homeless shelters that serve the homeless population.

Help Name Empire Ranch's 18 Hole Championship Golf Course (all day). Empire Ranch Golf Course is asking for your help in naming its 18-hole championship course and win an annual Empire Ranch Golf Course pass for 2020-21. The course is looking for a name to compliment our new Comstock Par-3 course that upholds the rich history of Nevada. The name should serve as a monument and reminder of this great state. Submit your entry at info@empireranchgolf.com or on Instagram @empireranchgolfcourse. The deadline to submit is Aug. 31 and the winner will be announced on Labor Day weekend.

Foothill Garden Streaming Education Series. 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. hosted by The Greenhouse Project and streamed live via Facebook. In this installment, we'll be discussing food forests or edible forest gardens. Explore the whats, hows, and whys of designing a layered polyculture system in your landscape. We'll dive deep into strategies, design elements, and climate appropriate species to grow.

Nevada Artists Association 2020 Summer Show. 12 to 4 p.m. at 449 W. King St. The Nevada Artists Association is excited to present the 2020 “Summer Show." This judged show represents a collection of 74 plus photographs, paintings, drawings, mixed media and 3D pieces by Nevada Artists Association members and non-members from Northern Nevada.

Beers in the Brewery at The Union Carson. 4 to 5 p.m. 302 N. Carson St. Join us in the brewery every Friday for a free beer tasting! Come and stop by the brewery to taste a couple of our house beers and have a few small bites while we teach you what makes each of our featured beers unique and delicious!

Jakota Wass at Bella Vita Bistro. 5 to 8 p.m. at 1304 S. Stewart St. Jakota Wass will be out on the patio at Bella Vita Bistro! Jakota plays country music. Come on out and enjoy some music and great taste cocktails and food!

Virtual Yoga Class. 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. hosted by Carson City Yoga. Yoga Nidra is a practice of letting go and relaxing. Details can be found via this link https://carsoncityyoga.com/yoga-nidra/

Virtual Open Mic Night at A to Zen. 6 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. In light of COVID-19, A to Zen Gift Shop in Carson City is hosting a virtual open mic night every Friday at 6 p.m. Interested participants can record their performance and send the video with the link above.

'Murder at the Gin Joint' at Virginia City's Piper's Opera House. 7 to 9:30 p.m. at 12 North B Street. Historic Piper’s Opera House in Virginia City, Nevada, is opening its doors once again for what it was meant to be — a performing arts venue. “Murder at the Gin Joint” premiers this August and is a murder mystery presented by the Piper’s Players.

Friday Night Karaoke at the Whiskey Tavern. 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at 3481 Hwy 50 E. in Carson City. Come hang out with the Whiskey Tavern and J and M Productions as we sing the night away every Friday! Must be at least 21 years old.

Saturday, August 15

Carson River Canyon Railbike Tours. 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. Visit Carson City, in partnership with the V&T Railway Commission, have announced an all-new attraction unlike any other in northern Nevada. Railbikes will run Tuesday-Sunday, four times a day 10 a.m., noon, 2p.m. and 4 p.m. Excursions are $45 per person. Tickets may be purchased online at vtrailway.com.

Flying Pig Indoor Flea Market. 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall, 701 Old Clear Creek Rd. Come on down to market at Fuji Park in Carson City and find some great treasures, lots of vendors to choose from. There is jewelry, arts, crafts, antiques, collectibles and so much more.

Carson City Farmer's Market. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. The Carson City Farmer’s Market has returned every Saturday with fresh fruits, vegetables and much more!

Suffrage Special at the Nevada State Railroad Museum. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2180 S. Carson St. In a partnership with the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Nevada Women’s History Project presents a day for you to return to an era when women were still fighting for the right to vote. Wear your “period” dress and chapeaux, which is anything from 1869-2020, and ride in historic cars and behind the engine that transported the suffragists to celebrate the centennial of the 19th Amendment. First Class in Car No. 4 is $35 for adults, $20 for children 4-11, free for children under age 4. After purchase of the ticket you should get an email within a few hours with more details.

Coin Press Demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum. 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 600 N. Carson St. Historic coin press demonstrations are back at the Nevada State Museum. Come on down and see the excitement with family and friends!

Virtual Off The Shelf Event. 4 to 5:30 p.m. hosted by the Carson City Library. Are you a book lover looking to make new friends? We will all share and discuss the various folktales chosen and have a general discussion about the importance of folktales. Brewery Art Center's Flatbed Concert Series continues with Ev and the Electric Soup. 6 to 9 p.m. through the neighborhood between Lompa Lane and College Parkway. We will be riding through Carson City on Saturday with rockin’ live music! Come join in on the fun.

Live Music at Living the Good Life. 6:30 p.m. at 1480 N. Carson St. Moxy Ruckus duo and Mylo McCormick-(guitarist extraordinaire) perform decades of rock, pop, dance music to this outdoor venue in downtown Carson City. Please be smart and maintain social distancing and wear protective face coverings.

The Big Clean 2020. 9 to 11 a.m. at Chimney Beach in Carson City. On Sunday, we want your help participating in cleaning up our beaches big and small nationwide. Ticket fees are $5, all proceeds will be going to the nonprofit TahoeFund!

Mystery Bingo at Pioneer Crossing Casino. 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 4 Pine Cone Rd. in Dayton. Mystery Bingo Games can be horizontal, vertical, four corners, "X", or a picture frame! Win a share of $270 games played!
